Per the 1930 U.S. Census, teacher Catherine A. Nelson was born about 1906 in Maryland. Based on the 1930 census, she served for the 1929-1930 and/or 1930-31 school term. She boarded in Morgantown at the home of David and Eliza Edmonds. In an oral history setting, former students, Willliam Norris Miles (b. 1922) and Lillian Smith (b. 1917) remembered Mrs. Nelson as one of the teachers. Norris indicated, “in those days, the older children would help the younger ones with their lessons.” Other Morgantown students concur with this practice. We continue to seek additional information on Ms. Nelson’s career.
