Lottie Bernice Grant Harmon

Born in Virginia about 1896. Her parents were Richard and Laura Woods Grant. Her husband Roscoe McClure Harmon was born in 1896 and served in France during World War I.

Lottie Bernice Grant Harmon Biography

They married June 14, 1920, in Tip Top, Tazewell, Virginia. On the 1940 U.S. Census the couple’s permanent address was Clear Fork in Tazewell, Virginia. Mrs. Harmon attended Bluefield State Teachers College. She graduated on May 29, 1934. She and 23 members of her class received a standard normal diploma. According to the U.S. Census for 1930 and 1940, she taught in Tazewell, Virginia, before coming to Morgantown. Mrs. Harmon taught in the early 1940’ies in Morgantown. Fauquier County School Board records indicate she was in Morgantown for at least two terms, 1940-41 and 1941-42. She boarded at the home of Louise and Asbury Jackson. Her husband, Roscoe, was employed by the Norfolk &Western Railway Company of Bluefield, West. Va. He died in 1971. Mrs. Lottie Harmon died in Roanoke, Virginia, on August 14, 1979. According to the Roanoke Times, August 15, 1979, she was survived by a sister-in-law, Mrs. Louise Grant, and many cousins. She was laid to rest in the family cemetery in Tazewell, Virginia.

Note: In 1934 Lottie’s relative, Mattye Lauretta Harmon, also graduated from Bluefield. She received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education. Per the 1950 U.S. Census, Ms. Mattye Harmon was teaching in The Plains at Foster Hill Elementary School. She was boarding at the home of Bernard and Mary Tibbs.
