Lula Moss Welch
Biography

Mrs. Lula Moss Welch was born ca. 1873, in Maryland. She completed three years of high school and was married to James H. Welch. In family discussions, Lillian Smith Dempsey (1917-2011) indicated that Mrs. Welch was one of the teachers at Morgantown. She lived in Morgantown with her husband, James, on the Welch’s family property. This property was off Mt. Joy Road in the area known today as Morgan’s Bluff. It is unclear whether Mrs. Welch was a County appointed teacher or whether she voluntarily assisted in Morgantown’s classroom. In these small, rural school settings it was not unusual for parents to visit and assist teachers and students where needed. Like many in the rural areas, the Welch’s moved to Washington, D.C. and lived on Riggs Street. Mrs. Welch passed away March 1951, and was buried in Morgantown. We continue to seek additional information on her time in Morgantown.
