Peter Grigsby was born ca 1858 in Morgantown and died 1932 in Washington, D.C. His parents were Brister and Nancy Glascock Grigsby. Information on or where Peter was educated has not yet been discovered. In Morgantown, Peter served as the church clerk. He began teaching in the Morgantown Colored Baptist Church’s original structure, referred to in later years as the “old hall.” The remains of the “old hall” were destroyed in a storm in the early 2000’s. In addition to teaching, Peter and his brother, James, ran a little store in Morgantown. In Warrenton and southern Fauquier, he worked in construction. Peter married Lucy Gaines and the marriage was performed by Morgantown’s Pastor, Elder Wormley Hughes. In the 1920’s, his wife and two daughters Cora and Luvenia moved to Washington, D.C. Cora and Luvenia continued their education in the public schools in Washington. Their son, Norman Brister Grigsby married Dovie Peters.
Sadly, Norman died young, and was buried in the Mt. Cavalry Cemetery in Catharpin, Prince Wm. County, VA. The family retained their home in Morgantown and returned for frequent visits home including to the church. Peter’s wife, Lucy, and he are buried in Morgantown on family property passed down through the generations. Peter and Lucy have no direct descendants. However, they have many cousins, nieces, and nephews living in Fauquier and the Washington Metropolitan area.
Some attended the Morgantown School, and some still live in Morgantown on properties once owned by Peter Grigsby, a teacher at Morgantown.
